On Friday I taught a grade 5/6 split at Altona College (P-9, which is Kindgarten to grade 9) in Altona. It was a forty minute train ride to Altona but was OK as Rianna and I were able to take the train together that day. I taught Math, Language and assisted with gym. The language and math periods were very long and they took up most of the day. Also, have the math lesson took place on laptops, which was very different. The schools have an open concept style, with lockers outside, an outdoor cafeteria (or canteen as they call it) and different blocks. Such as C block, D block, which all symbolize different areas for different grades or classes. They are very nice looking too with good resources.
Right away many of the students ask where I come from and ask many other questions about me and Canada. Often its funny questions such as, "Isn't it always dark in Canada?", "Is there always snow there?" "Is Canada in Europe?". The students are quite funny and its neat to listen to the different lingo here. Most students call you miss or mamm, and always ask "miss do you like footy?" The curriculum here is not to different but I do find much of the schooling a little bit more advanced and have a private school feel to them.
Today, I taught at Weribygong Secondary College which consists of grades 7-12. I taught 9's and 10's (mostly 10's) and had 6 classes:gym, drama, business, math, math again, and ESL. The school was very nice and it the only sports specialist school in Victoria. The gym was very nice. Although it was my first time teaching high school I had a great day!
I have thought about moving out to the country and finding a CRT contract which will allow Mark to work on a dairy farm and me at a school but I need to take a day off this week to do so. Possibly one day they may not have work. Were enjoying living in a home which is in an amazing location and I love teaching!
